Content Management Overview
'Content management' is the tools and processes that look after the content (the words and the images) on a web site. Content is best kept quite separate from the site design and construction so that the content owner can manage it without needing to know any of the technical detail and without inadvertently altering the way the site looks.
Web site design and construction
Overall look and feel of a web site is normally decided by Marketing to fit with company brand and image. The other key design consideration is the purpose of the site. The design needs to reflect the types of visitor, their requirements for information and the action they ought to take (e.g. buy something, ask for a quote, subscribe etc). The site design is often articulated by a graphical designer using a specialised suite of tools. The different skill set and toolset of the experienced IT professional is then needed to construct the web site and make sure all the following are covered:
- performance
- security
- accessibility
- search engines
- forms
- data feeds
- e-commerce
Content
Once the web site has been developed to meet the design and construction requirements, it then needs content. Content is normally delivered by a differently skilled person again, this time someone who knows what to write and how to write it for the web reader. Tools for this (normally) non-technical person need to be appropriately easy to use and need to protect against inadvertent change to corporate standards.
